The Perry Bible Fellowship Almanack (5)

 For this week’s assignment I read The Perry Bible Fellowship Almanack, by Nicholas Gurewitch. I really enjoyed this comic almanack! To be honest, I had low expectations starting this. To summarize this, these comics cover everything from A to Z. One thing I really like about this was the dark humor. I felt like this book is quite relatable when it came to humor. I wish some of these comic strips were expanded upon! There is so much potential with these characters. Even though some characters were reused, I felt cheated. Overall I really like the layout and type of the book. I also like  the front and back cover design! I feel like this was completely different from the art in the comic strips. I really like the unique art styles used in each comic strip. There’s just something about the simplistic “Keith haring style” used. The only thing I was questioning was the color palettes used in each strip. Some were good and others just didn’t really make any sense. While reading this I found numerous tangents in the illustrations. As an illustrator, that is a sin when creating artwork. From what I gathered, this artist has not been formally trained. To be honest, he does have potential though. I took a peak at the other comics on the site and I couldn’t really stand them. They look like they were made with little or no effort. This almanack on the other hand clearly took time to make. I think it gave me a new perspective on web comics. This was both amazing and a refreshing experience.

This book really snaps everything into perspective, and it also covers things that weren’t really discussed in other classes! The Arrival By Shaun Tan (3)

I absolutely loved The Arrival by Shaun Tan. After reading this comic book I found myself speechless. Since this is my first time reading a comic without words, it was a mesmerizing experience! Both the art style and page layout really helped support the concept of immigration. This work really showed the emotions that immigrants go through during the whole process. Most importantly, It also shows what the people went through before they moved. I'm glad that this part was included because it builds up more emotion. It also helps the reader understand what people went through prior. This comic is visually enhanced by the use of dark values, shape language, and composition. This can be seen when the dark, sharp, and monster-like tentacles are floating over the empty streets. This comic does an excellent job of showing the difference of the old and new world, and how one must adapt. When I was reading this, I kept thinking of the Wizard of Oz. Arkham Asylum (4)

  For this week’s assignment I read Arkham Asylum, by Grant Morrison and Dave Mckean. I really enjoyed this comic book! The story itself is organized and illustrated in a chaotic, but understandable format. Just reading this you feel like you're in a fever dream or an endless horror movie. It's a very different and refreshing experience from your typical comic book. Even the iconic villains were somewhat reimagined. I really appreciated this, especially with the textured mix media approach used. I feel like comic books with a fresh take can go either way. This comic has done an excellent job pushing the boundaries, while still staying true to Batman. Without a doubt, I can say this comic became one of my favorites!
