Moebius and Jodorowsky (7)

 For this week’s assignment I decided to read Moebius and Jodorowsky comic series. This series is primarily about John Difool, a class “R” detective, and an artifact called the incal. Throughout the story chaos is unleashed across the galaxy, and different factions are hunting John down for the incal. Along the journey he meets new friends that help him fight the darkness. To be honest I found it a little confusing at times. Throughout the story we are introduced to new characters or factions every five minutes, undefined technology, strange lands, an unexplained galaxy, etc. It felt like I was missing something while reading this comic series. It was almost like starting a movie from the middle, or only watching parts of a movie. Even though it was a little confusing, I really liked this comic series! The experience was similar to watching a movie. There were plot twists left and right, suspense, action, and so much more! One thing I found hilarious was the people watching the necropod television. I felt like it was definitely added for the comic relief. After all, the story is an action packed journey. When I was reading this series, I kept thinking about the fifth element for some reason and Star Wars for some reason. I felt One thing I really loved about this comic series was the art style used! Along with the simplistic style used, the viewer can clearly see the complementary color palettes used. I feel like these limited color palettes really push the emotion and mood in each frame.  Another thing I really enjoy was layout and compositions.Today I feel like comic book artists try too hard. Yes, the styles are great, but you kind of get sick of the repetition. I really enjoyed this comic book series along with the very unique ending!

This book really snaps everything into perspective, and it also covers things that weren’t really discussed in other classes! Understanding Comics By Scott McCloud (3)

In the Understanding Comics By Scott McCloud, this comic primary focuses on the numerous concepts behind comics. One concept that I found interesting was the simplification of comic books. The simplification of a detailed comic book character is a more abstract version. From that abstract version we have a simple character made of line. When reading this it makes you really appreciative of comics. It really shows the reader what a simplistic shape can be turned into, and the amount of time it takes to make a comic. From that simplification “we assign identities and emotions where none exist.” Some examples used in this comic book are an electrical outlet, the front of a car, and a container lid. In each one of those examples the viewer can easily see a face.  I feel like this truly opened my mind about shape and shape language. The Killing Joke (2)

       I thought this comic book was both amazing and rather dark. Yes this story has questionable moments, but it primarily focuses on psychology and human mind. I’m not saying what happened to barbara was ok. Both Jim and Barbara were just elements to understand the big picture. It shows how one bad day could affect one's state of mind.     When reading this comic book I made numerous connections. Even though this story focuses on the Joker’s origin story, we can see similarities between him and Batman. At the ending joke we have the sense of an “ending.” Although we don't know what happens, it ends the way it was started. Darkness and most likely tragedy. I feel like this is deliberate because it snaps the two perspectives together. When thinking about the message in this story, anyone could find this relatable.
